Does AND1 offer Women's Basketball Shoes?
We don't currently offer basketball shoes for women in our online store at this time.
Which type of shoes are best for basketball?
There is a range of opinions on which shoes are best for basketball, with many preferencing a certain brand, cut or style. The 'high-top, low-top or mid-top debate' comes up frequently and depends on how you like to play the game.
Each type offers different levels of ankle support, and the higher the op, the heavier the shoe. But, the real key to choosing a basketball isn't finding which shoes are the 'best basketball shoes'. It's actually understanding the type of player you are!
If you are an all-rounder, mid-tops can often be an excellent choice. If you have a high-contact or more aggressive position, or one that is demanding on the ankle area, high-tops are often the best due to their ankle support. If you move around a lot and need to do it fast, low-tops can be ideal as they add to your agility.
Should basketball shoes be light or heavy?
Great question! If you've read t e answer above, you'll already know that it's not a one-size (or weight!) fits-all story. Lighter shoes, which are generally lows or mids, or any style designed with lightweight materials, are excellent if speed is a factor in your game - because they won't weigh you down while running or during a vertical leap. Lighter shoes can also be a good fit for lighter players, as they provide less overall support and protection from impacts.
Heavier shoes are an excellent choice for those who need more cushioning and support. This may be due to a position being played or your overall build. Every choice will ultimately come down to style, comfort and support, but these guidelines are great to keep in mind wh le shopping. If you have any specific questions, please reach out and ask!
Is it okay to wear basketball shoes outside?
It certainly is okay to do in most cases, unless they are designed to be worn indoors only! There are some things to take into account, though, before doing so. We all love the style that basketball shoes carry, absolutely, and lots of people want to wear them to look great. If that's your intended purpose, go for it! If you are a serious player, it's best to keep them to the court for the most part to avoid additional wear and tear. Indoor shoes will fall apart quickly if worn in the wrong conditions.
You have two options when it comes to outdoor basketball shoes. The first? Use them on the court, and enjoy them casually (or frequently!) off the court - but expect to replace them much more often! The second? Start a collection! Keep the ones that give you the proper support for on-court, and shop to your heart's content for those to wear daily.
What is better, high top or low top basketball shoes?
If I have wide feet, are there particular men's basketball shoes that you recommend?
Absolutely. If you have wider feet, there are lots of things that can ensure a comfortable experience. Many men's basketball shoes take foot width into account during the design process. Using flexible fabrics from the mid-foot through to the toe enclosure creates the necessary give and stretch to accommodate wider feet, while still ensuring ankle support. Each brand will have its own offerings here, but our Tai Chi style offers a great example of this feature. Knowing your foot width measurement is very helpful when shopping for the best type of sports shoe also. Another consideration is the type of fastening on your basketball footwear. A shoe with a low velcro fastening or laces that start low on the foot are a great option for wider feet.
How do I take care of my basketball shoes to get the most out of them?
While nothing beats a new shoe feel, you can keep them as close to new as possible by maintaining them properly. Men's basketball shoes are made to accept a certain level of wear and tear, but caring for your shoes will keep them looking great, smelling fresh and keeping their wearer content! To start with, please look over the site of the brand you have purchased, filter a search for the name or style of your new shoes, to read any specific care instructions. Generally, basketball shoes can be spot cleaned with a gentle solution after each game, please ensure this is in line with your shoe manufacturer's advice. Inner soles can also usually be removed, hand washed, and air dried weekly. The way that you store your shoes can also have a massive impact on their overall appearance, so avoid leaving them at the bottom of your gym bag!
Do you accept returns and refunds?
Why do basketball shoes squeak?
Believe it or not, there is some great science behind this! Similar to the way car tyres may squeal on some car park surfaces, your basketball shoes will squeak due to the slick-slip principle. This is due to the friction caused by contact and release of two smooth surfaces, one of which may have a specific type of grip (such as your soles or car tyres!).
And it's not a bad thing! Many players test the cleanliness of their shoes and grip levels, or the court, by testing the level of squeakiness! A loud squeak indicates high traction, which is a great thing to be aware of before a big game.
How do I make my basketball shoes have more grip?
Grip is a big part of a good game plan. When you need to stop and start and high-impact speeds, knowing you can rely on your grip is reassuring. Dirt build-up on soles, or playing on dusty surfaces can impact your grip level, slowing down your ability to respond. Here are the top steps to keep your grip at a-game levels:
- Keep your soles clean! A quick wipe over after each game is an excellent habit to get into. It's also possible to clean them more thoroughly with a soft brush and mild soap (please check your care instructions first!)
- If your soles are losing grip during a game, moistening them lightly with a damp cloth can do wonders. Please do so carefully!
- Use a grip spray or grip enhancer. These are great quick fixes to improve grip instantly.
- If your shoes have gone to sole heaven, you have two choices! You can either have your shoes re-soled, or it's time for a new pair!

How long should basketball shoes last?
That's a big question with many variables. The quality of the shoe will have a huge impact here, as will the materials used and the frequency with which they are worn. A few games a week? You may need to replace your shoes twice a year. If you play daily? Every two or three months. How you care for your shoes matters too; following manufacturer instructions can keep them looking great for longer.
